What is a backflow?

A backflow occurs when there is a reversal of the normal direction of water flow. Normally it is when dirty water comes back through the drainage and pipes instead of flowing out to the drains. Backflow can happen in a water supply plumbing system more often than you think for a number of reasons.

A backflow can occur when the water delivery main is at a lower pressure than the internal plumbing system. This is called back siphonage. Back siphonage is the result of a burst or ruptured water main. It can also be due in the peak water demand seasons in summer.

Backflow is a great health hazard. If the drinking water supply is contaminated with dirty water, toxic pollutants can enter the main water supply and cause health and hygiene problems. Commercial property owners are responsible to maintain and check their backflow device yearly by the Water Corporation, in order to ensure that they are taking the appropriate steps to prevent backflow and water contamination onsite.
